Eligible but absent: Why most foreign residents don't vote in local elections

  • Foreign residents who don't have Swedish citizenship can often still vote in municipal and regional elections, but many don't take part.

  • Election participation among that group — who make up 7.6% of Sweden's total voter base — was just 30% at the 2022 election.

  • Yassin Hassan Dirie, who has applied for Swedish citizenship, says he doesn't think local and regional elections are as important.
