Sweden says Iran sent thousands of text messages calling for revenge over Quran burnings

  • Swedish authorities say that Iran was behind a 2023 cyber attack that sent thousands of text messages to Swedes calling for revenge against people who were burning the Quran.

  • Sweden's prosecution authority on Tuesday said that an investigation carried out by the country's intelligence service Säpo showed that it was the Iranian state via the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that carried out a data breach of a Swedish SMS operator to send 15,000 text messages.

  • ”That a state actor, in this case Iran, according to Säpo's assessment is behind an action that aims to destabilise Sweden or increase polarisation in our country is of course very serious,” Justice minister Gunnar Strömmer tells news agency TT.
