Controversy over unequal awards at football gala

Publicerad 12 nov 2013 · kl 12:23

Zlatan Ibrahimovic took the Footbal Association's Golden Ball award for a record eighth time. No surprise for the man who stands head and shoulders over all other Swedish footballers.

But another award at the same evening's gala has proven more controversial. A car was given to Anders Svensson, to highlight the 146 matches he has played for the national team. But many saw this as a slight to Therese Sjögran, who has played for the women's team 187 times.

The head of marketing for the Football Association now says to news agency TT that they will pay tribute to Sjögran when she ends her time in the national team.

But the team's coach, Pia Sundhage, is not pleased. "I'd hoped that, in the name of equality, Therese Sjögran, or someone else in the team that won third place at the World Cup (2011), would have got an award," she says to Expressen.

And Anders Svensson himself agrees, saying to Aftonbladet "she's played more matches, she can have my car."
