The government has allocated SEK 4 million to support programmes that combat internet bullying.

According to the TT news agency, the majority of the funding will be used to educate young people on what constitutes unlawful bullying on the net, especially on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

In an opinion piece for Swedish tabloid Expressen, Minister for Gender Equality Maria Arnholm, and EU Minister Birgitta Ohlsson say that hate and malice is rife on social media sites, and that it can affect anyone, regardless of sex, age or political persuasion - but that often it is girls and women who are worst affected.
